Man In Box

Posted in Fun, Media, Radio by Claire Burgess on March 15, 2010

There are just over 13hours left of Tim Shaw’s Man In Box. Tim is locked into a steel box that is 3 feet high, 4.5 feet wide and 8 feet long. His only daily highlight has been a delivery of basic food and water through a tiny double-skinned hatch. He is somewhere in the UK and will stay there for a total of 30days (or until he is found). He has no idea where he is accept for the fact it is somewhere significant that he has been before. If you find him in the next 13 hours you will get £30,000.

I met Tim a couple of times whilst working at Kerrang! and have always found his radio to be some of the most creative around. Now I wish I could just work out where he could be! You can work it out too here

Into 2010

Wow is it really February already?  I have been so busy lately blogging hasn’t been the top of my list. But I have missed you so I am going to give you the run down of the 10 most important things that happened to me at the end of 2009 in no particular order and then I promise I will start blogging again.

1. Moved to Worcester

I have moved to the beautiful city of Worcester. It’s lovely! I still work in Birmingham though so I’m traveling lots

2. Worked on my first single release

I worked with Muchuu (www.muchuumusic.com) on their first ever release Somebody Tell Me.

3. Made my first ever trip to Radio 1

Having been listening to Radio 1 since the days of Chris Evans I was really happy to finally pay them a visit. I met the very lovely Huw Stephens when I took Muchuu there for their first national radio interview.

4. My Grandad Died

He was old and had done lots of things I can only dream of. I miss him.

5. Got a job in Radio again

I’m now producing Simon Greening’s Weekend Wake Up on Radio City 96.7 in Liverpool. Having found a letter I wrote to them asking for work experience when I was 15 it has only took me nearly 10 years to get to the “top of the tower” To listen to the show or see what we have been up to go to www.radiocity.co.uk/simon

6. Made my first trip to America

I went Couch Surfing in New York for New Year. It was amazing. New Yorker’s are some of the nicest people I have ever met. If your thinking about going then just book a ticket right now!

7. Got a Blackberry

I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love what it has given to me and hate what it has taken away. Either way, times have changed.

8. Got a ticket to go to Nepal and climb Mt Everest

I’m off to climb Mt Everest with my friend Jemma in May. I will write more about this soon.

9. Smart Car troubles

My lovely Smart Car has died, come back to life, died again and then had its engine refitted. So far so good.

10. Set up Buy A Man A Boat

I set up a charitable organisation called Buy A Man A Boat (BAMAB for short) to help raise money for those who need it. You can read all about it here: www.buyamanaboat.com

Sony Rising Star Award

Posted in Birmingham UK, Claire Burgess, Media, Radio by Claire Burgess on April 7, 2009

A friend of mine from my Kerrang! days Henry Evans aka ‘Singing Henri’ is nominated for this year’s Sony Rising Star Award. He is a very nice guy and thoroughly deserves to win. His singing travel always made me laugh and he always used to help me out around the place. Now it’s my turn to return the favour. Please give him a listen and vote for him here: http://risingstar.sony.co.uk

UPDATE: Henry did win The Sony Rising Star Award 2009. Well Done Henri!!!!

Jon Bounds of Birmingham: It’s Not Shit flagged this up on twitter yesterday. Juvenile but funny! The presenter is just oblivious to the whole thing. Well Done BBC Radio Leicester, truly entertaining Radio but not in the way you intended.

What Life Sounds Like

Posted in Claire Burgess, Documentary, Dubai, Dubai Eye, IBDA'A, Media, Radio by Claire Burgess on February 1, 2009

Tomorrow is my last day in Dubai and my last day working on Dubai Eye’s Dubai Today programme. I have loved it and am so glad Dubai Eye have given me a proper role during my time and kept me working hard as the Assistant Producer on the show. I came to be here because I won an IBDA’A Award for a documentary I made with a Big Issue vendor in Birmingham. My prize was to come here to work for a month.

Dubai

As I won the prize for my documentary, Jessica Swann the Presenter of Dubai Today and Deputy Head of Programming for Dubai Eye asked me if I would like to make a documentary to play on the show. I agreed and decided to make a documentary for the show based on an idea I had when we had blind marathon runner Katy Newitt on the show a few weeks ago.

It was based on the idea that Dubai is famous for lots of famous buildings, places and things to see. However, what is life like for you in Dubai if you can’t see any of this?

I have never made a documentary in such a short time before as usually I work with the subject over the course of a month or so but was only here for a month so was restricted by time. You can listen to my documentary in full here:

What Life Sounds Like

It will also be broadcast on Dubai Eye 103.8 tomorrow between 9am-12. The documentary is called ‘What Life Sounds Like’ and is the story of Faress Al Hady a visually impaired man who lives and works in Dubai and Sharjah.

Haile Gebrselassie- The Fastest Marathon Runner On The Planet!

Halie

Halie crossing the line in The Dubai Marathon 2008

So my time in Dubai is flying by. I am now producing a daily current affairs programme for Dubai Today and yesterday managed to get a big interview for the station. Not bad considering it is only my first full week in the job. We interviewed Haile Gebrselassie ahead of the Dubai Marathon this weekend.

Since working here I have had to speak to 100’s of PR people and marketing folk in order to get interviews with even the smallest organisation and so I was really surprized when I managed to get a phone number for Haile and he answered the call himself! He was one of the nicest guests I have ever had on a show and was as lovely off air as he sounds on it.

Listen to the interview here:

Haile Gebrselassie Interview

Haile won the Dubai Marathon last year and holds the world record for the marathon after running it in 2hrs3minutes and 59 seconds in Berlin in 2008. Tomorrow he will be hoping to break the record if only for the extra $1million prize money. Not bad concidering his Dad once thought his running was a waste of time. GOOD LUCK HAILE! YOU CAN DO IT!

UPDATE : Haile did win the Dubai Marathon 2009 with a time of 2h:05m:29s. Due to wet conditions he didn’t manage to break his record but still managed the 8th fasted time in the world.
