Man In Box

Posted in Fun, Media, Radio by Claire Burgess on March 15, 2010

There are just over 13hours left of Tim Shaw’s Man In Box. Tim is locked into a steel box that is 3 feet high, 4.5 feet wide and 8 feet long. His only daily highlight has been a delivery of basic food and water through a tiny double-skinned hatch. He is somewhere in the UK and will stay there for a total of 30days (or until he is found). He has no idea where he is accept for the fact it is somewhere significant that he has been before. If you find him in the next 13 hours you will get £30,000.

I met Tim a couple of times whilst working at Kerrang! and have always found his radio to be some of the most creative around. Now I wish I could just work out where he could be! You can work it out too here

Into 2010

Posted in Claire Burgess, Media, Miscellaneous, Music, Radio by Claire Burgess on February 2, 2010

Wow is it really February already?  I have been so busy lately blogging hasn’t been the top of my list. But I have missed you so I am going to give you the run down of the 10 most important things that happened to me at the end of 2009 in no particular order and then I promise I will start blogging again.

1. Moved to Worcester

I have moved to the beautiful city of Worcester. It’s lovely! I still work in Birmingham though so I’m traveling lots

2. Worked on my first single release

I worked with Muchuu (www.muchuumusic.com) on their first ever release Somebody Tell Me.

3. Made my first ever trip to Radio 1

Having been listening to Radio 1 since the days of Chris Evans I was really happy to finally pay them a visit. I met the very lovely Huw Stephens when I took Muchuu there for their first national radio interview.

4. My Grandad Died

He was old and had done lots of things I can only dream of. I miss him.

5. Got a job in Radio again

I’m now producing Simon Greening’s Weekend Wake Up on Radio City 96.7 in Liverpool. Having found a letter I wrote to them asking for work experience when I was 15 it has only took me nearly 10 years to get to the “top of the tower” To listen to the show or see what we have been up to go to www.radiocity.co.uk/simon

6. Made my first trip to America

I went Couch Surfing in New York for New Year. It was amazing. New Yorker’s are some of the nicest people I have ever met. If your thinking about going then just book a ticket right now!

7. Got a Blackberry

I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love what it has given to me and hate what it has taken away. Either way, times have changed.

8. Got a ticket to go to Nepal and climb Mt Everest

I’m off to climb Mt Everest with my friend Jemma in May. I will write more about this soon.

9. Smart Car troubles

My lovely Smart Car has died, come back to life, died again and then had its engine refitted. So far so good.

10. Set up Buy A Man A Boat

I set up a charitable organisation called Buy A Man A Boat (BAMAB for short) to help raise money for those who need it. You can read all about it here: www.buyamanaboat.com

I came across Charlie McDonnell (@coollike) on twitter the other day only to find he was like the king of YouTube videos with 166,341 subscribers to his YouTube channel I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Then I saw this video and new instantly why he is so popular. It really made me smile. Thanks Charlie!

A friend of mine from my Kerrang! days Henry Evans aka ‘Singing Henri’ is nominated for this year’s Sony Rising Star Award. He is a very nice guy and thoroughly deserves to win. His singing travel always made me laugh and he always used to help me out around the place. Now it’s my turn to return the favour. Please give him a listen and vote for him here: http://risingstar.sony.co.uk

UPDATE: Henry did win The Sony Rising Star Award 2009. Well Done Henri!!!!

Someone Once Told Me…

Posted in Birmingham UK, Claire Burgess, Fun, Media by Claire Burgess on March 26, 2009

Someone Once Told MeToday my picture is on Someone Once Told Me. It is a picture I had taken by Mario Cacciottolo at last month’s Birmingham Social Media Cafe.

The idea behind SOTM is that you write down on an A3 sheet of white paper something someone once told you-simple as that! I wrote something my boyfriend often tells me when I send him off to make me a cuppa. I’m also a big tea drinker so it seemed very appropriate that I used “Britain was built on cups of Tea.” I just think that tea makes everything better and I can’t work without it.

I’m Someone Once Told Me number 566 and here is what Mario said about my picture:

“This lady, who is quite a character, would be perfect for a Creature Comforts interview, I think. If you don’t know what that means, check this out http://www.creaturecomforts.tv/ Happily she is on SOTM, with a quote said to her regularly by her boyfriend. She revealed that on a “tea day” she’ll consume about 10 cups. Seems quite a lot, really.”

I really enjoyed doing this so I might even come up with another one…there are some really great ones on there with fantastic stories so it is an honour to be on this site. You too can do a picture for Someone Once Told Me, just follow the guidelines here.

Right…Now it’s time for a cuppa!

Radio Fun and Games!

Jon Bounds of Birmingham: It’s Not Shit flagged this up on twitter yesterday. Juvenile but funny! The presenter is just oblivious to the whole thing. Well Done BBC Radio Leicester, truly entertaining Radio but not in the way you intended.

The CREDIT CRUNCH Has Even Hit Dubai!

Posted in Blogging, Claire Burgess, Dubai, Media, Radio by Claire Burgess on February 12, 2009

I’m back in the very lovely and snowy UK now and back in my office at The Custard Factory in Digbeth. It seems like ages since I was at work here. In fact it has been. I haven’t been in since before Christmas.

Anyway, since I’ve been back loads of people have been asking about what Dubai was like. One of the things they were most surprised about was that The ‘Credit Crunch’ has even had an effect there. I think lots of people thought it would some how be immune.

The best example I can give is the story of Andrew Blair. We interviewed him on Dubai Today after the story broke that he had been made redundant from his £75,000 construction Project Manager job in Dubai and then written on the back of his white Porsche in black marker pen to advertise himself. This made international news including this story in The Telegraph, after a Dubai blogger took a photo of his car. This idea seemed to excite people and one of our Dubai Today Presenters Alexander McNabb, even thought it may start the new phenomenon of ‘Porsche Scrawling.’

Life in Dubai

Andy's Car Photo: Life in Dubai

Since we did the interview this story has taken a dramatic turn after newspapers revealed Andrew was wanted by Dubai police for 35 speeding offences and unpaid fines of more than £700. And as it turns out…he’s still looking for a job.

What Life Sounds Like

Posted in Claire Burgess, Documentary, Dubai, Dubai Eye, IBDA'A, Media, Radio by Claire Burgess on February 1, 2009

Tomorrow is my last day in Dubai and my last day working on Dubai Eye’s Dubai Today programme. I have loved it and am so glad Dubai Eye have given me a proper role during my time and kept me working hard as the Assistant Producer on the show. I came to be here because I won an IBDA’A Award for a documentary I made with a Big Issue vendor in Birmingham. My prize was to come here to work for a month.

Dubai

As I won the prize for my documentary, Jessica Swann the Presenter of Dubai Today and Deputy Head of Programming for Dubai Eye asked me if I would like to make a documentary to play on the show. I agreed and decided to make a documentary for the show based on an idea I had when we had blind marathon runner Katy Newitt on the show a few weeks ago.

It was based on the idea that Dubai is famous for lots of famous buildings, places and things to see. However, what is life like for you in Dubai if you can’t see any of this?

I have never made a documentary in such a short time before as usually I work with the subject over the course of a month or so but was only here for a month so was restricted by time. You can listen to my documentary in full here:

What Life Sounds Like

It will also be broadcast on Dubai Eye 103.8 tomorrow between 9am-12. The documentary is called ‘What Life Sounds Like’ and is the story of Faress Al Hady a visually impaired man who lives and works in Dubai and Sharjah.

Left for Dead!

Posted in Claire Burgess, Dubai, Dubai Eye, Dubai Today, Media, Radio by Claire Burgess on January 25, 2009

So I’m in to my last week here at Dubai Eye now. One of the big highlights from work last week was Ricky Megee. He was drugged in Australia’s Northern Territories and left for dead. He managed to survive there for 70 days on a diet of frogs, snakes and leeches before being rescued. He has written a book about what happened called ‘Left for Dead in the Outback’. It includes some shocking pictures including one of him just after he had been found…having lost a lot of weight. A truly shocking and amazing story of survival.
